Glassy amorphous oxides are fascinating materials in that their amorphous nature provides for enormous functionality. Amorphous SiO2, in particular, forms the backbone of fiber optics technologies that conform the vast optical network that supports the internet. In their thin film form transparent amorphous oxides, such as SiO2 or HfO2, are building blocks of photonics devices. I will describe the synthesis and characterization of amorphous oxides and showcase how it is possible to tailor their functionality for the engineering of mult dielectric structures for advanced photonics applications as in ultra-high intensity near infrared lasers and the ultrastable optical interferometers of gravitational wave detectors. The state-of-the-art of mult dielectric structures for these two applications and their future demands will be discussed.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Carmen S. Menoni is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She also holds appointments in the department of Chemistry, the School of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Advanced Materials Discovery. Prof. Menoni’s expertise is in optics and material science. Her current research focuses on the synthesis of amorphous thin film materials by ion beam sputtering for the implementation of novel coating architectures for photonics applications. Through a combination of fundamental understanding of the optical and structural properties of amorphous oxides and device engineering, Prof. Menoni research is advancing the state-of-art in interference coatings for ultra-high intensity lasers. Menoni is a member of the international LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) collaboration where her work on thin film amorphous oxides is contributing to understand the origin of coating’s internal friction that limits the sensitivity of the interferometers. Menoni is also actively involved in using high-brightness coherent beams of light of wavelengths between 10-50 nm for optics applications such as nanoscale imaging, and chemical composition mapping. Her work is described in over 300 archival publications and has been presented in 450 conference talks, including 120 invited presentations, at national and international conferences.
Prof. Menoni is Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the American Physical Society (APS), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the SPIE. Carmen Menoni is founding editor of IEEE Photonics Journal. Prof. Menoni is currently President of the IEEE Photonics Society. Menoni has extensive experience in managing research programs involving several organizations. She has also experience in collaborating with industry. As a result of this work she was the recipient of the Colorado Technology Award in 1998 and in 2000 for the development of products and processes that were transitioned to industry. Dr. Menoni and her group received in 2008, a R&D 100 award for the invention of a compact microscope that can image nanoscale s. Carmen Menoni has co-funded XUV Lasers where she serves as President.
