As a powerful tool for high-precision material processing and functionalization, femtosecond lasers can pattern materials that are extremely hard to treat and produce surface textures down to nanoscale, which often resemble those found in nature and are far smaller than the light wavelength. In this talk, I will discuss some of our recent advancements in femtosecond laser micro- and nano-processing, including the resulting surface structures, a quest for laser lithography, the structural formation dynamics, and the drastically altered surface functionalities. I will also discuss a range of ensuing applications.
BIOGRAPHY
Chunlei Guo is a Professor in The Institute of Optics and Physics at University of Rochester. He also helped found an international lab for lasers and Photonics at CIOMP, China. His research is in the area of femtosecond laser-matter interactions, and his work at Rochester has led to the discoveries of a range of highly functionalized materials, including the so-called black and colored metals and superhydrophillic and superhydrophobic surfaces. These discoveries can find a broad range of applications and have received extensive public interest, including being featured 4 times on The New York Times. He is a Fellow of American Physical Society and Optical Society of America. Currently, he serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the CRC Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications (2nd Edition), which is due to release in 2020 as probably the most comprehensive handbook in the field of lasers.
