Light sustains lives, colors our world, and is behind many enabling modern technologies. We explore micro- and nanostructures that can enhance or create new capabilities. One example is structural colors that exploits optical resonances as an alternative for the colorant-based pigments and provide high brightness, durability and stability, and environmental safety, and may find potential applications in displays, imaging, special effect coatings, and building-integrated photovoltaics. Conducting structures can be made perfect absorbing or highly transparent, each has important applications, e.g. in generating acoustic waves and in optoelectronics, especially aiming at high efficiency, flexibility and sustainability. High throughput manufacturing technologies (such as R2R nanoimprint, plasmonic lithography and electrochemical deposition) were also developed to push these technologies to real world applications. This talk is a dedication to many past students who have made outstanding contributions to these works.
