ABSRACT
Our interest in making stretchable bioelectronics stems from our work in microfluidic chips that allow many biomedical functions, such as diagnosis, screening/synthesis of therapeutics, as well as tissue engineering. Integrating liquid metal and elastic polymer-based microfluidic chips into stretchable electronic circuits, we find that these stretchable circuits can dramatically expand the capability of micro-/nano-scale structures in a variety of biomedical applications, such as biomedical sensing, tissue engineering, drug discovery and biological computing. For example, a fully stretchable blood oxygen sensor and a fully stretchable sweat detection device can be prepared by using liquid metal elastic polymer microfluidic devices. These new materials can also be used to prepare healable electronic blood vessels and vascular stents that allow gene therapy on targeted live tissues.
